Studio One Ska
November 05, 2010 01:28 PM PDT
Studio One Ska Output from the early 1960s. Legends like The Skatalites, Bob Marley and Jackie Opel in the mix on labels like C&N, Studio 1, Muzik City, Coxsone and Island. Enjoy! Nice Like RiceJune 07, 2010 11:45 AM PDT
One of our latest issues at Mixcloud.com. We put it on podomatic for download. First tune "Dreamland" by Roland Alphonso, a deep and hidden gem on the flip side of the original Rock Steady version of "54-46" by the Maytals (PYR 6030). Next tune is the classic "Do I Worry?" by Derrick Harriott on a JA Crystal blank, absolutely Killer stuff and a Motown cover. Followed by the tune which gave this episode it's name: Basil Daley with "Nice Like Rice", a Stranger Cole and Delroy Wilson on their W&C label. This copy is a blank. After that Hopeton Lewis with "I Don't Want Trouble", Merritone stuff and the flip of legendary "Rock A Shacka", tuff business! The bongo driven tune which follows is "Call Of The Drums" by Johnny & The Attractions. These guys know how to impress with deep and terrific Rock Steady! Sonia Pottinger production on a Gay Feet Blank. The Bongos in that tune set us in the motion for some Roots tunes, first one "Oridinary Man" by Lloyd Parks, Chin production on the Impact! label. Next one "Street Of Gold" by the Heptones, murder production by A. Graham on the JA Tom Tom label. The intro reminds to Ennio Morricone. After That you'll hear "Rub A Dub Style" by Ranking Michigan and General Smile on the "Vanity" riddim, Studio One label, Coxsone Dodd at the controlls. The next two tunes are Joe Gibbs productions: The classic "Uptown Top Ranking" by Althea and Donna and the mighty "Badder Than You" by Clint Eastwood, a diss tune against Dillinger and Trinity, both on the "I'm Still In Love" Riddim. Speaking of Dillinger, the next tune is named "Natty Sings A Hit Song", a DJ cut on the JA Arab label over Roman Stewarts hit with same title. After that deep Roots business by Iroy: "Black Man Time" on the "Slavery" riddim. Continuing with 60s sounds some Early Reggae for your ears: The Sam Cooke cover "Chain Gang" by Bobby Francis on the WIRL label, dancefloor filler and all time favorite. Produced by the fameless Garnet Hargreaves. He got some really heavy productions from Ska to Rock Steady but is regrettably pretty unknown today. Check out the Ska Version by the Jamaicans on the Supreme Label. The next tune is "Worries A Yard" by the Versatiles. Usually you'll find it on the UK Crab (CRAB 5)label, but this is German Business! Nice and clear sounds on the Ariola label. The 15th tune in this mix is "The Same Thing" aka Room For Rent by The Gaylads. This is the Lee Perry production on a JA Upsetter blank, there's also a Randy's cut around. After that another Gaylads tune with B.B. Seaton on the lead vocals: "Something Is Wrong Somewhere", Leslie Kong production on a JA Beverly's blank. Next one is a obscure but soulful 70s tune: The Fabulous Flames - "Growing Up" produced by Clancy Eccles. We found that JA Clandisc blank in a Jamaican lot, in UK you'll find it on the Brown Trojan label (TR 7822). The next and last four tunes are all Ska tunes: First one is "Jet 707" by the Prince Buster All Stars on a JA Wildbells blank. The second one is "Renegade" by the Zodiacs on UK Island (WI 235), Duke Reid produced Murder Ska! The third one is "I Won't Let You Go" by the Blues Busters, pure magic produced by Byron Lee on the JA Kentone label. The fourth Ska tune and the last one of the mix is "Come Home" by the Jamaicas Greatest. Prince Buster Ska on the UK Blue Beat label (BB 317) Memories by the scoreOctober 22, 2009 12:05 PM PDT
The following six songs are dedicated to our beloved mum (*18.6.1959 - †19.10.2009) and dad (*19.2.1956 - †24.3.2007). Rest in peace, it's hard to believe that you're gone... Heptones - Crying Over You

We did this Podcast together with our mate Fabse from Oberhausen who was selecting at our first Allnighter in Kiel. It starts with some cool Rock Steady tunes, continues with Early Reggae and ends with Ska. Don’t expect ultra rare stuff or versions, just GOOD music. The 2 or 3 little jumps and some surface noises are not caused by bad vinyl condition but by the bad condition of our turntables Enjoy it! 1. Roy Shirley - Get On The Ball (JA Caltone)
